It’s become traditional for the mayors of cities to place bets on sporting events when their teams, college or professional, meet in important games.
So, of course, Palo Alto Mayor Yiaway Yeh placed a bet on Stanford in the Rose Bowl against Madison Mayor Paul Soglin, who mistakenly believes that the University of Wisconsin will win.
On the line, trees. (Clearly, The Cardinal have the upper hand.) The losing mayor will organize a tree planting in honor of the winning team. The losing mayor also will wear the opposing team's hat during a City Council meeting and display the flag of the winning team for a day in January.
