Palo Alto Signs On With Yangpu District

Mayor Yiaway Yeh signs Memorandum of Understanding with China's Yangpu District Vice Mayor Chen.

Palo Alto Mayor Yiaway Yeh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with China's Yangpu District Vice Mayor Chen on Thursday to formally cement the relationship between the two innovative cities.

"We call it a Partnership of economic development, environmental issues and investments going both ways," Yeh said. "It is important to do this kind of relationship right."

The formal ceremony took place inside the Palo Alto City Council Chambers and also involved the Bay Area Council, which has been working with both Palo Alto and the Yangpu District for several years.

"The value of having a public ceremony is to help raise awareness of the relationship between China and the U.S. Both nations have an impact on global economy and the environment. It's essential that we work together."

Yeh also said that a similiar agreement is in the works with Heidelberg, a city in  southwest Germany.

"Formalizing the agreement is a key step for Palo Alto," Yeh said of the MOU signing. "We look forward to better sharing and learning from what has happened with the Yangpu District."

The Bay Area Council is a business-sponsored, public policy advocacy organization that also seeks to unite top business leaders. A large portion of its membership comes from Palo Alto.
