Palo Alto Spared Devastation of 1998 Flood

The 1998 disaster impacted lives for years.

While some flooding was evident in Palo Alto Sunday night, a collective sigh of relief was exhaled when San Francisquito Creek began to recede.

Longtime residents know that it could have been much worse. A devastating flood in February 1998 damaged homes, businesses and government buildings, flooded the airport and municipal golf course, and submerged Highway 101.

The Santa Clara Valley Water District, which has jurisdiction over the creek, has been working for years to mitigate flood dangers.
