Water Loss, Lane Closure Due to Water Main Break in Palo Alto

Water already restored to homes on Alma Street, but commuters should expect delays.

A large 12 inch concrete water main cracked in the middle of the night disrupting water service to homes in Palo Alto, the city informed Friday morning.

The water main, located on Alma Street near El Carmelo Avenue, caused 38 customers to lose water, but overnight utility crews restored service around 6 a.m., according to Palo Alto Utilities spokeswoman Debra Katz.

However, to crews had to cut into the street to reach the cracked main and this has now caused the closure of a northbound land utilities trucks and crews work on the road restoration, Katz explained.

Palo Alto's primary water main that runs down Alma Street and recently portions of the main have been replaced.

"The pipeline that cracked last night was not part of that project," Katz said, but part of a connecting main line leading off the central main."

PA Utilities will post updates on their website and twitter account.
