Independence Day in April?

Experience the richness of different cultures when thousands of South Bay residents celebrate Israeli Independence Day on Thursday, April 26.

Thousands of South Bay residents will recognize Independence Day on Thursday, April 26, but not because they’re misreading the calendar. It’s Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israeli Independence Day, and although it’s not a national holiday in the United States, plenty of people will be celebrating.

For American Jews, celebrating Yom Ha'atzmaut is a way to express solidarity with the state of Israel, strengthen their alliance with it and come together as a community. Between 30,000 and 40,000 Israelis live in the Bay Area with the majority of them residing in Silicon Valley. They’re a diverse bunch that mirrors the cultural blending of Israel.

To celebrate that diversity, the Oshman Family JCC is hosting Yom Ha’atzmaut: Israeli Blend on Thursday, April 26 from 4:30 PM to 10:00 PM. This free event features the art, music and food of Moroccan, Russian, Armenian, Polish, Yemeni, Persian, North America and Ethiopian Israelis. It’s a great way for Israelis and non-Israelis alike to experience the richness of different cultures. Nearly 2,000 people came to last year’s event and organizers believe even more will come this year.
