Let's Tango!

Tango is alive and well in the Bay Area, so put on your dancing shoes and give it a try!

Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced pro, the tango community of the Bay Area is vibrant, huge and very much alive. Check out tangomango.org to see how many tango events happen on any given day.

“I really love the music,” says Alex Roitman, accordion player for the Argentine Tango band Tangonero. “It has so much drama. A typical tango song is around three minutes, and it travels through quite a lot of places during that short time.”

Tango can be soft and flowing as well as fast and exciting. That's what makes it so appropriate for a dance of love at wedding receptions and parties and why people can dance tango all night long.

Some favorite spots in San Francisco to try tango include El Valenciano Restaurant and the Verdi Club, which holds the oldest running milonga in the Bay Area on Thursday nights. Alberto's in Mountain View has tango each and every Sunday and Monday while Samovar Hall in Mountain View holds weekly lessons and workshops every Monday for beginners.

Up for giving tango a try? Come out for a free night of dancing in Palo Alto on Saturday, August 11 at 7:30 PM and listen to the sounds of Tangonero at the Oshman Family JCC for an evening that squeezes your heart to tears and then sets your feet to dancing. The event is part of the On The Town Summer Series on the Jessica Lynn Saal Town Square.
