Time to Help the Hungry

Now is a good time to help those in need; three local agencies could use your support.

With the economy showing signs of welcomed recovery, it’s easy forget that many of our neighbors are still struggling to make ends meet. According to the 2011 Santa Clara County Homeless Census and Survey, it’s estimated that 18,272 persons experience homelessness annually in Santa Clara County. Hundreds more are homebound whether they are elderly or have disabilities. During this season of Passover and Easter, many families donate or volunteer to agencies that help those in need, but now is a good time for all of us to reflect on how we can better serve our community. Here are several agencies that could use your support.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties
Second Harvest Food Bank distributed 45 million pounds of nutritious food in its last fiscal year to low-income people in need from Daly City to Gilroy and from the ocean to the bay. Despite their efforts, it was determined that 184 million meals were missing for hungry families in 2010.

The Health Trust Meals on Wheels
This well-known program serves the frailest of the frail in Santa Clara County by delivering nutritious meals to physically challenged, homebound individuals. Meals on Wheels currently serves more than 700 clients in Santa Clara County, delivering more than more than 97,000 meals annually.

Jewish Family and Children’s Services
The comprehensive social services of this organization supports and strengthens people of all ages, beliefs, and backgrounds. They organize a community-wide Turn Matzah into Mitzvah project to provide Passover foods to more than 400 Peninsula neighbors in need. For many recipients, this is their only opportunity to celebrate Passover and to feel remembered at this time.
