Lassen: Fumaroles, Mud Pots and a Boiling Lake
USGS geologist emeritus Patrick Muffler presents a free public lecture on "Lassen Volcanic National Park -- a wonderland of volcanoes and thermal features.” This rugged landscape has the most spectacular array of thermal features in the Cascade Range, including steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pots and a boiling lake.
Lassen Peak, the southernmost active volcano in the Cascade Range, erupted explosively in 1915, devastating nearby areas and sending volcanic ash up to 200 miles east. A new USGS map shows the Lassen Volcanic Center in unprecedented detail, depicting the many volcanic and geothermal features of Lassen National Park.
Please join us to learn how USGS scientists are working with the National Park Service to make these features safely accessible while evaluating and assessing the regional volcanic hazards.
