Palo Alto Kids Head Back to School

It may feel like summer, but the school calendar is signaling a new season--the fall semester.

Palo Alto Unified School District hit the fast-forward button this year, sending kids back to school on the earliest date ever—Aug. 16.

The reason is simple—kids will finish their first semester before the December holidays, saving review time in January and ensuring that kids get a true break over the holidays instead of working on projects due at the end of the semester.

The school year will end next spring on May 30, giving families an early jump on summer vacation.

More than 12,000 students packed into classrooms this morning.

At Jane Lathrop Stanford Middle School they were met by jackhammers and backhoes, according to Palo Alto Online. New science labs and classrooms are being constructed, with a completion date set for 2014.

Major projects are underway at other schools, funded by a $378 million bond issue passed in 2008.

Kids have a way of ignoring stuff like construction as they focus on friends, new teachers, new challenges, cool backpacks, and a bright year ahead.
