Palo Alto USD Names 3 New Elementary School Principals

Palo Alto Unified School District Superintendent Kevin Skelly has recommended three principal appointments for elementary schools to the Board of Education, district officials said today. 

Skelly announced Amanda Boyce as the principal at Addison Elementary School, Grant Althouse as the principal of Fairmeadow Elementary School, and Louise "Nicki" Smith as principal of Ohlone Elementary School.

The recommendations will be presented at the Tuesday -- May 6 -- Board of Education meeting.

Boyce replaces Jocelyn Garcia-Thome who is moving on to other employment in the South Bay.

Althouse replaces Gary Prehn who is retiring.

Smith replaces Bill Overton who is retiring.

Boyce is presently the principal at Stocklmeir Elementary School in the Cupertino Union School District, where she has served for the past two years.
Prior to that, she was the assistant principal at the same site.

She has held a variety of leadership positions in Cupertino including district curriculum support teacher,intervention teacher, new teacher mentor, and summer school principal for their Special Education program.

"As a mother and educator, I appreciate the District’s work to ensure that academic progress is balanced with social and emotional development. I am eager to get to know the students, staff, and parents ofAddison School and look forward to collaborating on a vision that supports the growth of each child.”

Althouse has been an Assistant Principal at Jordan Middle School for the past two years and was a Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) at JLS Middle School the prior year.

Before these roles, Althouse was a well-respected fifth grade teacher at Addison Elementary School in the District for eight years.

He also was a student of Walter Hays Elementary School and Jordan Middle School.

“I'm honored to serve the Fairmeadow community as principal," Althouse said. "I look forward to working alongside our students, teachers, staff, and parents to embrace Fairmeadow's rich tradition of student-centered instruction, community mindedness, and social-emotional focus.”

Smith has served as principal for a total of 15 years at the Stanford Elementary School in East Palo Alto, Slater Elementary School in Mountain View, and Jamestown Elementary School in Arlington, Virginia.

For the past three-and-a-half years, Smith has been a Reading Specialist at Ohlone Elementary School.

“I am really excited about the opportunity to work with the Ohlone community, teachers, parents, and especially the students,” Smith said

Dr. Skelly added: "We are delighted to be adding these three outstanding educators to our administrative team.”
