School District Has Emergency Plan for an Active Shooter on Campus
Since the 1999 Columbine shooting in Colorado, school districts have taken measures to prevent similar attacks, including Palo Alto Unified.
Palo Alto Unified School District works closely with the police department to ensure that schools and personnel are prepared for the possibility of an active shooter being on campus.
The district has trained all personnel to follow specific steps for locking down the school and safeguarding children. The safety plan includes different scenarios for whether children are inside classrooms or outside at recess or P.E. In addition, teachers have been instructed to take specific steps in their classrooms to thwart a shooter.
In the interest of transparency, Victoria Geen-Lew, Supervisor of Risk Management for the district, provided a copy of the Active Shooter Checklist to Patch. We will not publish it, to safeguard the district’s plan.
