'The Melt' Celebrates Grand Opening Downtown on Sunday

Even better - 100 percent of Sunday's grand opening sales benefits the Redwood City Education Foundation.

Mmmm...melted cheese sandwiches and a piping-hot cup of soup. Sounds like the perfect food to accompany the chilly, rainy weather we've been having in Redwood City lately.

And now, Redwood City residents and workers will have a hip new place to order food just like that, as The Melt celebrates its grand opening downtown on Sunday.

Even better news - for its first day of business this Sunday, The Melt will be donating 100 percent of sales to the Redwood City Education Foundation!

What is The Melt?

Paul Coletta, The Melt's chief marketing officer, describes it in one simple phrase - "grilled cheese happiness."

The Melt specializes in warm, melted sandwiches, made with "hearth-baked, artisan breads" and all your favorite fillings. Try the Fontina and Provolone on Garlic Bread, the Bacon Reuben Melt, the Brie with Apple Honey on Country French Bread, and more.

Then, you can pair your chosen melted sandwich with the perfect soup, such as their Two-Tomato Basil, Creamy White Mushroom, Italian Sausage and Pepper, Sweet Corn Tortilla, Spicy Black Bean and more.

Coletta said, The Melt uses 100-percent natural ingredients - from local sources whenever possible - in its soups, and all the artisan bread is baked locally as well.

"And, our food is all served in our eco-friendly environment," Coletta added, pointing out that all their food containers are 100-percent compostable.

Don't forget to save room for a sweet, melty concoction like the Chocolate S'More melt, too.

Don't like waiting in line? You don't have to at The Melt!

Ordering your food at The Melt is anything but common, Coletta told Patch.

Hungry customers can skip the line at The Melt by going to TheMelt.com from their computer or smartphone and placing their order.

Then, they can walk into any one of The Melt's seven locations - the web ordering system doesn't require you to pick one - and walk up to a kiosk that will scan your online receipt. The chefs at The Melt will then start preparing your order for you.

In other words, your order hasn't been sitting around getting cold and stale since you placed your order, and you don't have to stand in line for even a second.

"Our technology is really a big part of enabling a great customer experience in our stores," Coletta explained.

Choosing Redwood City for The Melt's seventh location

Coletta said, choosing downtown Redwood City for The Melt's seventh location was easy.

"We believe Redwood City is where our customer is," he explained. "The people who live and work in Redwood City obviously appreciate good food, and are looking for the kind of experience we offer."

Coletta said The Melt is also a great place for Redwood City residents to bring their families.

"We're very family-friendly," he said.

Besides - what kid doesn't love a good grilled cheese sandwich? The Melt is known for its children's menu item, "The Kid," which pairs grilled cheese with a sliced apple for just over $4.

I LOVE The Melt!! My daughter and I will make a trip to Stanford Shopping Center just to go there, so we're VERY happy to have them in town! They have DELICIOUS, GLUTEN FREE sandwiches (I'm allergic to wheat) and it's so nice to have such great comfort food nearby. The fact that they're using their opening to support our local public schools makes me like them even more. One suggestion to The Melt, please get gift cards, there are a lot of kids at Berkeley I like to send care packages to and The Melt is VERY close to the dorms. Thanks!!

I've heard a lot of great things about The Melt, but have never been there. I'm excited that they are here in RWC. I'll be there tomorrow to support RCEF and The Melt!
