National Champs Stunned By Unranked Team

The Stanford women's soccer team, ranked number one in the nation, was upset Sunday by an unranked team.

The Stanford women’s soccer team had not lost a game since Dec. 5, 2010, and their last non-win was a 0-0 tie on Aug. 26, 2011. So the outcome of Sunday’s game against West Virginia, an unranked team, was unfathomable. The women fell 1-0.

An unranked  team. West Virginia isn’t even unbeaten for the season. Their win over Stanford brought them up to .500.

Stanford’s loss came at the Penn State Invitational at University Park, PA. The Cardinal are now 2-1 on the season.

The Cardinal's unbeaten streaks ended at 28 matches overall and 64 in the regular season.

"My reaction is that soccer can be a cruel sport at times," Stanford coach Paul Ratcliffe said. "West Virginia had a good game plan, and we lacked energy and creativity."

Ratcliffe said the loss may relieve a little bit of pressure.  "To me, any streak we have is over at the end of each season,” said Ratcliffe. “This is a new squad and they've got to create their own legacy."
