Report: Nuclear Racks Up the Subsidies

After the debacle at San Onofre and the tsunami in Fukushima, one would think that nuclear energy was on shaky ground, especially with all the chatter from Washington and Sacramento about investments in renewable resources. But even with distributed rooftop solar taking off in California and across the nation, it appears that our government is still propping up the same old industries.

Case in point, check out this new report from DBL Investors on how subsidies for nuclear compare with those for solar. In case you're not a big fan of reading, I'll give you the Cliff's Notes: It's not even close. In fact, California's nuclear industry has received $8.21 BILLION in federal subsidies over the last 50 years, or four times as much as the solar industry over a period six times as long. And nuclear received far more in subsidies than solar in its early stages.

Meanwhile, solar subsidies are currently under attack across the country. The same investor-owned utilities who foisted nuclear upon us are attempting to stifle innovation — just when we need it most. But I have good news: The solar industry is fighting back, and this report is just another arrow in their quiver. Please share it far and wide.
