Asset Builders Chili Builds Assets and Builds Community

Why would The Palo Alto Developmental Assets Initiative throw its hat into the ring of the beloved Chili Cook Off? Our team of 20 is half students and half adults.

Why would The Palo Alto Developmental Assets Initiative throw its hat into the ring of the beloved Palo Alto Chili Cook Off?  We're in it to win it and win it with style.  Our team of 20 is half students and half adults so we get a great combination of enthusiasm, creativity and fun.

We want to win and we want to spread the word about the importance of the Developmental Assets. What are Developmental Assets? The Developmental Assets are the positive values, relationships, skills and experiences that help young people thrive and become caring, responsible, successful adults. Because of its basis in youth development, resiliency, and prevention research and its proven effectiveness, the Developmental Assets framework has become one of the most widely used approaches to positive youth development in the United States.  Through Project Safety Net’s Developmental Assets Initiative Palo Alto is taking action to build Assets in our youth.

The Chili Cook Off gives us the opportunity to introduce this framework to members of our community who may not be familiar with it yet.  Our "construction crew" will be out acting as ambassadors for the Assets (and advocates for our chili.)  Our team will also demonstrate some important assets as we work together as a team of youth and adults to build community in Palo Alto:

  • #3 Other Adult Relationships | Young person receives support from three or more nonparent adults.
  • #7 Community Values Youth | Young person perceives that adults in the community value youth.
  • #8 Youth as Resources | Young people are given useful roles in the community.
  • #9 Service to Others | Young person serves in the community one hour or more per week.
  • #14 Adult Role Models | Parent(s) and other adults model positive, responsible behavior.
