Take the Palo Alto Caring Neighborhoods Challenge

Do just one new thing this spring or summer to build assets for your neighborhood. Throw a Block Party or a Cookies+Conversation party or try something new. Be creative!

Let’s build assets in our youth by supporting Developmental Asset #4 Caring Neighborhood | Young person experiences caring neighbors.

Easy ways to do this include:

  • Know the names of the youth in your neighborhood; go out of your way to say “hi” when you see them around.
  • Let it be known that your front yard is welcoming.  If you have a basketball hoop or tree swing let the neighbors know their kids are free to use them.
  • Go to their events.

Block Party – Palo Alto Style
Block Parties bring neighbors together generally with lots of food, games, music and sometimes some friendly competition.  Find a few hours on a weekend when most folks will be around, reserve a block of a street and get planning.  Need help planning?  Use our new Block Party Tool Kit to help with the planning.  The City of Palo Alto is offering "Know Your Neighborhoods" grants (www.cityofpaloalto.org/neighborhoodgrant) to facilitate community members getting together and getting to know one another.   the Tool Kit has information on organizing an event and applying for a grant.  Be sure to include things to tempt neighbors of all ages. – your young and formerly young neighbors will love spending time together.

Cookies+Conversation
Want something lower-key?  How about a Cookies+Conversation event. C+Cs are designed for a 90-minute break from everyday life for some cookies and lemonade on a porch (or driveway) in the neighborhood.  You don’t have to shut down a street or clean your house. Neighbors, young and formerly young, will have the chance to meet, chat and catch up.  The Palo Alto Developmental Assets Initiative (a Project Safety Net team) will even underwrite the treats.

Youth Photo Contest
We'll have a monthly youth photo contest with cash prizes.  Have your neighborhood youth send us photos of the event with a brief description and your neighborhood could win!
