Update: Humane Society Seeking New Home for Abused Puppy Found in EPA

The Peninsula Humane Society was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for Candy, who has now been adopted.

"We also want to take the opportunity to make a case for our 30+ Chihuahuas awaiting adoption at our Center for Compassion in Burlingame.  They aren’t two-month-old, dyed pink puppies, but we consider these 'regular' adoptions to be every bit as special as Candy’s adoption.  We are extending our current adoption promotion and waiving the adoption fee for all Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes in our care."

Peninsula Humane Society and SPCA staff are searching for the owner of a Chihuahua puppy with dyed pink fur that was found in East Palo Alto last week.

The roughly 2-month-old female dog, which the staff has named "Candy," was rescued by a good Samaritan who found her lying in the street with a broken leg around 5 p.m. on Jan. 13, according to shelter staff.

No one has come forward as the pooch's owner, and she was found without a collar or ID tags, and isn't microchipped.

The dog suffered a hairline fracture to her right rear tibia and is receiving pain medication and resting at the PHS/SPCA facility in San Mateo until she recuperates.

The owner is encouraged to pick up the dog at the shelter's intake facility at 12 Airport Blvd. in San Mateo.

However, since it has been more than a week since the dog arrived, Candy is eligible to be adopted or taken into foster care, according to shelter staff. Interested foster families can call the shelter at (650) 340-7022, ext. 382.

The shelter is looking for new owners who demonstrate an understanding that Candy is recovering and for the next few months will need to be in a quiet, restorative environment.

Staff said the pink dye has not come off after bathing the puppy, and it is unclear what was used to create the pink color.

Candy's injury does not require her to be in a cast or undergo surgery, staff said.
