Appropriately adopting the slogan, "Friends Around the World," Escondido Elementary is one of twelve elementary schools in the Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD). Escondido students come from 32 countries and speak more than 25 languages. Of the other Palo Alto schools, this school has the highest percentage of multilingual students. Thirty-seven percent of students attend the Spanish Immersion Program, which includes a one-week El Molino trip in February or March. The administration places a large emphasis on global awareness and tolerance for other cultures, which is evident in the school's diverse make-up. Assemblies, community events and music and art activities encourage students to expand their horizons outside of Palo Alto. Residents of Stanford University's graduate student family housing comprise approximately 20 percent of students. Class size is limited to 20 students in grades K-3 and fourth and fifth grade classes typically have 20 or fewer students. Special Escondido Elementary events include a four-day field trip to Mount Herman Outdoor Science School for fifth graders, a trip to a California Mission and a two-night trip to Coloma (gold country) for fourth graders.
