Named after a revered Palo Alto educator who died in 1963, Lucille M. Nixon Elementary opened in 1970 as part of the Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD). Nixon has the largest grounds of all 12 PAUSD Elementary Schools. In 2009, the K-5 school had an Academic Performance Index (API) growth score of 955, meeting the school-wide growth target. One-third of Nixon Elementary students' first language was not English, but a May 2010 survey showed that third, fourth and fifth graders' favorite library activity was reading aloud to a partner.
