The tennis duo—and twin brothers—are hoping to compete for gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games this summer.

Got a grad? What better way to honor them than by posting a photo of your favorite graduate on the pages of the Patch? It's that time of year to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of hundreds of graduates at various grade levels throughout Palo Alto who will be walking the stage and receiving diplomas. We are in the process of creating a special photo gallery that will feature Palo Alto graduates - and those from Palo Alto who are graduating from regional colleges - and are putting the call out to Palo Alto Patch readers to send us your graduate's photos. Palo Alto's Lily Zhang has earned herself a ticket to the London Olympics this summer. The 15-year-old is one of three table tennis olympians who train at the India Community Center in Milpitas. For coach Rajul Sheth, 41, the table tennis center’s director, it’s all part of the plan. This year they compete; In 2016, they win medals against players from China, who now dominate the winners’ podium. By qualifying more than one player to this year’s Olympics, “We exceeded our goal,” Sheth said. “We’re in the pipeline.” In addition to Zhang, the other Milpitas players are Ariel Hsing, 16, of San Jose; and Timothy Wang, 20, of Houston. Annual Fireworks Night will kick off series against Washington State.
A fireworks show will entertain Cardinal fans Friday night after their game against Washington State, according to an announcement sent to College Terrace residents Thursday. The 10-minute show will follow the game between 8:45 p.m. and 9:45 p.m, said Stanford Assistant Director of Marketing & Event Presentation Andrew Sikic in a letter to the College Terrace Residents Association. The event is Stanford Baseball’s annual Fireworks Night, and the 12th-ranked Cardinals (29-14, 11-10, Pac-12) will face off against Washington State (24-20, 9-11, Pac-12) at 6:00 p.m. The game is at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. Strange circumstances lead to major setback.
It may sound a bit off for a team that is outscoring their opponents 160 to 104 to have a record of 3-7. Usually, when a team scores more, it means they win more and have a winning record. And the Palo Alto High School varsity girls lacrosse team did have a winning record, up until last week, when the Lady Vikes had to forfeit six of their wins after it was discovered that the games had been won with an ineligible player on the field. On April 19, the Lady Vikes had a 88.8 winning percentage. The next day, after defeating crosstown rivals Henry M. Menlo boys' lacrosse team knocks down Paly.
The Menlo School boys’ lacrosse team defeated host Palo Alto 11-7 in a “great, emotional win” Thursday night in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League play on the road. The Knights (8-9 overall and 6-4 SCVAL) avenged an earlier overtime loss to the Vikings. Menlo got a five-goal, two-assist performance from junior Wiley Osborne, who also picked up four ground balls. Luc McNally collected 14 saves in another standout outing. “Our players can score goals, as they have all year, but lately our goalie Luc McNally has been sensational and has inspired our effort with his play,” Menlo coach Todd Blumbergs said. Quakes teaming with AYSO for annual tournament featuring regional youth players.
The San Jose Earthquakes is teaming up with the Palo Alto American Youth Soccer Association (AYSO) to launch the first annual AYSO El Palo Alto Invitational Tournament this weekend. The tournament is designed to exposed young soccer players to the professional sport and to forge an alliance between the Earthquakes and Palo Alto AYSO. Prizes from Earthquakes—Major League Soccer franchise—will be awarded to tournament winners, and the Quakes mascot Q will be on-hand along with the Shakers squad. Earthquakes midfielder Joey Gjertsen and one other player will be signing autographs at Mitchell Park and Greer Park Sunday between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Palo Alto AYSO Region 26 is hosting the event, and eight sides were accepted into brackets at …

Sam Wopat was junior Olympian and member of 2010 U.S. Women's Junior National Team.
The Stanford University athletics community is mourning the loss of a sophomore player on the women's volleyball team who died at Stanford Hospital on Sunday. Samantha "Sam" Wopat, 19, had been in intensive care since she suffered an undisclosed medical emergency at her Stanford home on March 17, university officials said. Wopat, a former junior Olympian and member of the 2010 U.S. Women's Junior National Team, joined the Stanford women's volleyball team in 2010 along with her twin sister, Carly. Athletics director Bob Bowlsby said in a statement that university administrators, coaches and students are mourning Wopat's death.
